The VSR10 platform suffers from accuracy loss due to the somewhat tenuous relationship between the action (where the optic is mounted) and outer barrel (which maintains inner barrel alignment). The simple problem is that, in gunsmithing terms, the rifle isn't able to be headspaced, so the threads between action and outer barrel are loose. Big threads, particularly on rifle actions, need to be held under tension for optimal performance. This polycarbonate spacer can be used to generate this thread tension, tightening the interface between action and barrel while also tightening the tolerance around the front of your cylinder which improves chambering/hop consistency. Ours is made from a strong an solvent resistant polycarbonate.
To install, first remove the barreled action from the stock. Through the port in the bottom of the outer barrel, note the position of the cylinder head relative to the rearward face of the hop chamber (with the action closed). When the action is tensioned on the barrel, you want this distance to be maintained. Unscrew the outer barrel and remove the forward cylinder shim. (it is no longer required) Install the VSR action tensioner in its place. It will sit inside the action threads, and take up the space between the rear of outer barrel and the rim inside the VSR action. Screw your outer barrel back on until it snugs up against the action tensioner. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. Note how, as you exert pressure on the tensioner, it grows laterally and takes up the slop in the front of your cylinder. Check the viewing port to observe the distance between the cylinder head and hop rear. This amount of material must be removed from the action tensioner to achieve correct headspace. While many tools can accomplish this, we recommend a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface, moving in a figure-eight motion. Repeat this process of removing material and checking until the outer barrel is tensioned against the action when the outer barrel is in the correct position. We recommend lubricating the outside of the cylinder/inside of the action tensioner with a PTFE thickened silicone grease, such as the Superlube we sell.
